NBA Finals 2026: Dos au mur, les Spurs dévoilent leur identité de guerriers
The precocious maturity displayed by the second youngest team in NBA Finals history is no accident. It's the result of a perfect balance between youthful exuberance and veteran composure, an alchemy that translates into unwavering mental fortitude. When asked about the team's composure in the hostile atmosphere of Madison Square Garden, center Luke Kornet attributes this success to the deep-rooted culture of the Texas organization: "It's really just a product of the players we have, our coaching staff, and our organizational focus. We have a lot of competitive guys who are here to win, and who have experience winning at different levels. When we maintain focus on ball possession and the game at hand, that's what we rely on."
Beneath the iron discipline imposed by the coaching staff, the strength of this team also lies in a shared joie de vivre that defuses the pressure of big games. It is in this spirit that the now-famous "Spurs Dance" was born, this pre-game ritual that illustrates the unique camaraderie of the group. "A good part of the credit goes to Keldon [Johnson]," Kornet says with a smile. "Keldon is kind of the energy guy, the hype man in the pre-game circle. Yeah, we've kind of turned quarterback Dak Prescott's warm-up into our own thing! We all get a kick out of playing together and a kick out of coming to every game. We do this dance whether someone's there or not."
While the atmosphere remains lighthearted behind the scenes, on the court, the mentality hardens as the stakes rise. Victor Wembanyama reiterated this point: this group is never more formidable than when its back is against the wall. It's a fighting spirit that the entire locker room has embraced to weather the storms of this playoff run. "With the playoffs and high-stakes games, the joys are greater, the suffering is greater," Kornet reminds us. "Your opponent will look for every possible way to test you. So, you have to have the freedom, especially collectively, to simply know that you're here to fight and to compete. And also, to know who you are and your identity, so you can rely on that. It's a testament to the identity we've managed to establish throughout the season."
In this trench warfare that resembles a giant game of chess, veteran Harrison Barnes highlights the leap forward made in Game 3 to regain control of the series thanks to clinical execution: "I think the most important thing for us is that we limited our mistakes a little bit. We executed our game plan better. I was proud of our guys, obviously, for rising to the occasion. Obviously, it was a crazy atmosphere, a crazy game, but the most important thing is that we felt good after the forty-eight minutes we played."
With 62 wins in the regular season, the Spurs have proven they have tactical talent, but it is their warrior mentality that could well upset the New York Knicks after spoiling the party at home.
