NBA : les Los Angeles Clippers frappés par une sanction historique dans l’affaire Kawhi Leonard
The Los Angeles Clippers have just received one of the heaviest penalties ever imposed by the NBA. The California franchise was fined $30 million, or 17 billion CFA francs, for violating league rules related to the salary cap in agreements involving its star player, Kawhi Leonard.
The decision follows a nearly month-long NBA investigation. According to the league's findings, the Clippers deliberately sought to favor their former star player by granting him access to off-court income opportunities.
But the penalty doesn't stop at the financial fine. The franchise will also have to forfeit five first-round draft picks, spread between 2029 and 2033. This particularly heavy penalty will significantly impact the club's sporting prospects for the coming years.
Steve Ballmer suspended for one year
Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is also directly affected by the findings of the investigation. The NBA has suspended him for 12 months, during which time he will be barred from all league and team-related activities.
This decision relates in particular to his alleged involvement in discussions surrounding sponsorship contracts and commercial opportunities granted to Kawhi Leonard during his time with the Clippers.
The league believes the organization "knowingly sought to help" Leonard obtain additional income outside of his player contract, in violation of applicable rules.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made no secret of his resolve. He expressed deep disappointment at what he considers particularly serious violations of league rules. According to him, the severity of the sanctions directly reflects the seriousness of the franchise's alleged misconduct.
Kawhi Leonard also sanctioned
Although he wasn't spared from the proceedings, Kawhi Leonard received a significantly smaller financial penalty than his former team. The two-time NBA champion will have to pay a fine of $700,000.
The 35-year-old forward, however, rejected the idea that he had knowingly participated in any attempt to circumvent the salary cap. In a message posted on Instagram, he stated that he accepted his share of responsibility while regretting the consequences of this affair.
Leonard maintains that he signed his contract with the Clippers and all related agreements "in good faith." He also asserts that he was unaware of any intention to circumvent NBA salary regulations.
The NBA has also suspended Gillian Zucker, president of business operations for the Clippers, for one year without pay. She is being sanctioned, in particular, for providing information deemed false to investigators during the proceedings.
The league describes the events as a veritable "pattern of misconduct," citing several significant rule violations by the California organization.
The Clippers will now be placed under increased scrutiny. For five years, the franchise and certain members of its staff will have to follow a specific compliance and monitoring program overseen directly by the NBA.
Having arrived at the Clippers in 2019, Kawhi Leonard quickly made the franchise one of the NBA's main attractions. After seven seasons with Los Angeles, the two-time Finals MVP left the team at the beginning of the year.
This affair is now likely to leave a lasting mark on the history of the franchise, both because of the amount of the fine and the loss of draft picks and the suspension of its owner.
