Affaire des 25 millions impliquant le fils d'un magistrat :Cheikh Ba recadre les plateaux TV après l'emballement autour d'une "erreur de jeunesse"
The president of the Union of Magistrates of Senegal (UMS), Cheikh Ba, addressed the controversy surrounding the arrest of a magistrate's son, who was found with bundles of banknotes in the company of other young people. A guest on the Sunday Jury program on iTV, he strongly condemned the media's exploitation of the case, arguing that it had been used to discredit the judiciary, particularly members of the Financial Judicial Pool (PJF).
According to him, the events primarily involved youthful indiscretions committed by young children. He explained that the group of teenagers was apprehended while attempting to purchase a vehicle with a large sum of cash. One of the minors, the son of a magistrate, had simply agreed to have the purchase contract drawn up in his name because his friend—presented as the main perpetrator of the theft—did not yet possess a national identity card.
Cheikh Ba claims that during the investigation, the young man panicked and falsely stated that the 25 million CFA francs came from his father's wardrobe. The president of the UMS (Union of Muslim Students) describes this claim as completely unfounded. "It wasn't true," he insisted, adding that the newspaper that published the information later retracted its statement and published a different version.
The president of the UMS deeply regrets that this initial, erroneous version fueled false accusations against legal professionals who had no connection whatsoever to this affair. According to him, due to a simple coincidence of names, another magistrate was unjustly implicated and cited as a suspect on several television programs. The prosecutor of the Financial Judicial Pool was also implicated, even though, according to Cheikh Ba, he had absolutely nothing to do with this situation.
For the president of the UMS, this episode perfectly illustrates the excesses that can accompany freedom of expression when it relies on rumors or unverified information. While reaffirming that freedom of the press is a fundamental right, he reminded everyone that it cannot be exercised without rigorous responsibility, under penalty of seriously damaging the reputation of citizens and institutions unjustly dragged through the mud.
