[Immersion] Vie chère : Le combat de Mère Thiama pour cuisiner un thiéboudiène avec 5 000 FCFA
In Dakar, 5,000 FCFA can vanish in minutes among the stalls of a market. To see for ourselves, we followed Mère Thiama to the Castor market, with a simple mission: to buy ingredients to prepare a thiéboudiène for her family. An ordinary immersion, seemingly, but one that reveals an increasingly harsh reality: that of households who calculate, make sacrifices, and compromise just to put food on the table.
That morning, Mother Thiama entered the Castor market with 5,000 FCFA in her pocket. Not a penny more.
In front of the stalls, the choice is immense: fish, vegetables, rice, oil, spices… Everything needed for a thiéboudiène seems within easy reach. But as soon as you start shopping, your money quickly loses its value.
Fish. Some vegetables. Rice. Oil. Condiments.
With each purchase, the budget shrinks. With each hesitation, a choice must be made.
Mother Thiama does her calculations, compares items, and forgoes certain products. The basket fills up, but not enough. Thieboudienne is still possible, but not quite the same as before.
That's the paradox: 5,000 FCFA seems like a lot when you hold it in your hand. At the market, it quickly becomes very little.
And behind this experience lies a reality that far surpasses Mother Thiama's case. In Dakar, for many households, eating properly has become a daily balancing act. Families reduce quantities, eliminate certain ingredients, change their habits, and make do with what they have.
For large families, the pressure is even greater. When several mouths are waiting around the same pot, every expense counts.
Yet, a few hours later, the pot is steaming. The fish simmers, the vegetables infuse the sauce with their aroma, and the rice absorbs the flavors. The thiéboudiène is there, hot, colorful, and appetizing.
But behind this beautiful plate, there is a bill: the bill of sacrifices.
With Mother Thiama, our video report tells the story of this race against prices, from the Castor market to the kitchen. An immersion into the daily lives of these families for whom preparing the national dish has become a real challenge. And when filling the pot becomes a headache, having enough to eat also ends up seeming like a luxury.
