[Mondial des footeuses] De l'ESP aux sélections nationales : Comment Walimata Sèye brise les codes du football
With a refined elegance evident in both her dress and her speech, Walimata Sèye shines today thanks to the insightful nature of her sports analyses. Through her exemplary conduct and erudition, she challenges misogynistic stereotypes within a field long dominated by men.
Her career commands respect. Walimata Sèye has now established herself as one of the most respected female figures in Senegalese football. Inspired by her father, a former footballer, she immersed herself in this world from the age of 5, following the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN).
At 10 years old, she joined the Pépé Ouakam football school, a renowned structure through which promising players of the U20 national team have also passed, such as Pape Demba Diop and Samba Diallo.
On the pitch, her playing career has been marked by success. At the national level, she successively represented the Sirènes de Dakar – a club with which she won the Senegalese league and cup several times – the Aigles de la Médina, and Médiour de Rufisque. Her talent then opened doors to Europe: she played in the French first division for ASPTT Albi from 2015 to 2018, before joining FC Domont in Division 3 in 2019. Internationally, she proudly wore the jersey of the Lionesses of Senegal from 2005 to 2010.
A sharp mind and a successful career change
Alongside her sporting achievements, Walimata Sèye has successfully pursued higher education. A graduate in Banking, Finance and Insurance from the École Supérieure Polytechnique (ESP) in Dakar, she brilliantly managed to combine academic demands with high-level sport.
Once she hung up her boots, her transition to the sidelines was a natural one. Having become a coach, she put her expertise to work for several organizations, including the KN Foot academy in Fatick, a senior men's team in the regional division (2021-2022), and then the Dakar Sacré-Cœur (DSC) women's professional team between 2023 and 2025.
Today, in addition to her activities as a consultant on the national channel (RTS), Coach Sèye has been in charge of the national women's U15 and U18 five-a-side football teams since 2023.
A model of audacity for the new generation
Despite facing numerous challenges inherent in a predominantly male environment, Walimata Sèye never wavered from her path, driven by unwavering confidence and a deep-rooted passion for football. Today, she urges her peers to fully commit to sport and embrace boldness, while emphasizing the absolute necessity of training to successfully transition into coaching.
A true role model for young girls aspiring to a career in football or technical coaching, her journey and administrative and sporting achievements remind us that with determination, no barrier is insurmountable.
