Sitöé : Brillante élève en Terminale S2, Awa Faye handicapée par la drépanocytose
At 24, Awa Faye has already fought more than one battle. A brilliant student in her final year of high school (Terminal S2), her life changed drastically in 2021 when she was diagnosed with S-beta-thalassemia, a severe and complex form of the disease. She was only 19 years old.
Since then, complications have piled up. And today, she is confined to a wheelchair. Between vaso-occlusive crises and chronic pain, Awa's journey could have ended there. It was marked by two postponements of her Baccalaureate exam, which her illness forced her to postpone.
But despite this setback, she remains hopeful and cheerful. It's a state of mind she shares daily on TikTok. Behind the screen, she doesn't complain. She's doing her bit by raising awareness about the disease. Because for her, eradicating severe forms of sickle cell disease requires screening and electrophoresis testing before marriage, in order to protect children.
Invited on the program Sitöé, Awa Faye raised her voice. She launched a poignant appeal for national solidarity through a fundraising campaign set up for her. She specifically appealed to the two First Ladies of Senegal for support in covering the costs of her surgeries so that she can recover and realize her dream of becoming a doctor.
