[JOJ Dakar 2026] Dia Ba, Wade, Diouf, Sadio Mané...: Qui sera l'ultime porteur de la flamme olympique ?
Just hours before the official opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), scheduled for Saturday, October 31st at the Abdoulaye-Wade Stadium, the question that is fueling the curiosity of Senegalese people remains unanswered: who will have the honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron? While their identity remains closely guarded by the Organizing Committee, several emblematic figures of Senegalese sport, politics, and culture are fueling the wildest speculations.
As the final adjustments come to an end, certain exceptional routes naturally direct attention towards legends who have shaped the contemporary history of the country.
Amadou Dia Ba, the Olympic pioneer
The first name that stands out is that of Amadou Dia Ba. Silver medalist in the 400 meters hurdles at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, he remains, to this day, the only Olympic medalist in the history of Senegal.
His pioneering career and deep roots in the Olympic movement make him a natural candidate to deliver the final blow in the relay. His lighting of the cauldron would be a powerful tribute to the generation that raised the national flag to the pinnacle of the Olympic pantheon.
Sadio Mané, the idol of an entire generation
The other figure likely to trigger a huge wave of popular enthusiasm is undoubtedly Sadio Mané. A two-time African Footballer of the Year and African champion with the Lions of Teranga, the star striker embodies success and civic engagement in the eyes of young people.
His international aura, his immense record, and his popularity transcend the strictly sporting realm. Seeing the Senegalese football hero light the trophy would offer an image of considerable impact, leaving a lasting impression on the minds of thousands of young athletes from all corners of the globe.
Amy Mbacké Thiam, the queen of Edmonton
In the select circle of national athletics legends, Amy Mbacké Thiam occupies a unique place. She made history by winning the gold medal in the 400 meters at the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton.
Still the only Senegalese athlete to have won a world title, her victory symbolizes tenacity and excellence. Her nomination would give a special resonance to the ceremony, honoring women's sport and one of the finest chapters in African athletics.
Abdou Diouf and Abdoulaye Wade: The stature of heads of state
The names of former presidents Abdou Diouf and Abdoulaye Wade also come up in discussions because of their historical significance.
President of the Republic from 1981 to 2000, Abdou Diouf embodied the state for two decades and enjoys a respected international stature as a statesman. As for Abdoulaye Wade, his name remains intrinsically linked to the sports complex and stadium in Diamniadio, which is hosting this opening ceremony.
Youssou Ndour, the voice of Senegal internationally
It is difficult to measure Senegal's cultural influence without including Youssou Ndour. A major figure in world music, the artist has carried the sounds and image of the country to stages all over the planet.
His influence, his status as a cultural ambassador and his constant commitment make him a unifying figure often cited among the leading national symbols.
Whether it's Amadou Dia Ba, Sadio Mané, Amy Mbacké Thiam, Abdoulaye Wade, Abdou Diouf, or Youssou Ndour, the range of personalities considered testifies to the richness of Senegal's collective memory. While sporting figures seem to be the frontrunners for this purely Olympic event, the mystery will remain until the very last second of the relay.
