Present in Senegal for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the Israeli delegation is escorted by its own security personnel. This has been standard practice since the Munich massacre in 1972. The president of the Israeli Olympic Committee, Yael Arad, nevertheless praised the excellent collaboration with the Senegalese authorities in providing a safe and secure environment for its young athletes.
The Israeli delegation attending the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is accompanied by its own security detail. This is a systematic and unwavering precaution since the tragic assassination of eleven members of the Israeli delegation at the Munich Olympics in 1972.
The safety of Israeli athletes is not negotiable depending on the destination. In Dakar, as with all major international competitions worldwide, the delegation traveled meticulously escorted by its own close protection officers. When questioned about this exceptional protocol, Yael Arad, president of the Israeli Olympic Committee and head of mission to the Youth Olympic Games, recalled its historical and painful origins: the Munich massacre in 1972, during which eleven athletes and coaches from the Israeli delegation were killed by a terrorist commando.
“Since that tragic event, for every competition, we always travel with our own security,” she explained. This consistent policy applies without exception to all international travel for the national team, whether for events held in Europe, America, or on the African continent.
This highly secure system does not, however, mean operating in isolation. Yael Arad emphasizes the close collaboration established with the defense and security forces of the host countries. In Dakar, she praised the smooth cooperation with the Senegalese authorities, a partnership which, according to her, allows young athletes to feel fully protected and to immerse themselves calmly in their competitions.
For the sports director, this security coverage also stems from a moral duty and a personal responsibility towards the teenagers involved in the competition. At this age, a first major international event already represents a significant sporting and psychological challenge. Ensuring optimal security should therefore provide them with the peace of mind necessary to fully experience their Olympic adventure on Senegalese soil.
