Afrique du Sud : 232 doses de crack cachées dans une tête de poupée
The airport scanner detected the hiding place. Police also claim to have found 93,220 rand in cash on the traveler.
A particularly unusual hiding place led to the arrest of a 36-year-old traveler in South Africa. Police say they discovered 232 rocks suspected of being crack cocaine inside a doll's head used by hairdressers. The seizure took place at Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfontein.
The woman was about to board a flight to Johannesburg when the contents of the mannequin head caught the attention of security personnel. A large sum of money was subsequently found on her, adding a financial dimension to the investigation.
A doll's head spotted by the scanner
The incident occurred on Saturday, August 22, at approximately 11:26 a.m. A supervisor from the company responsible for managing the airports alerted the police unit responsible for crime prevention after detecting suspicious material at the scanner.
Police identified a doll's head used for hairdressing training. The object belonged to a passenger who was scheduled to travel from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg. Forensic specialists were also called in to process the scene and preserve evidence relevant to the investigation.
When the head was opened, officers removed the foam filling. They discovered numerous pieces wrapped or concealed within the padding. The count was conducted in the suspect's presence.
232 stones suspected of being crack
A total of 232 rocks were seized. Police describe them as suspected crack cocaine. Their street value is estimated at 300,000 rand, or approximately €14,500 at the current exchange rate.
A body search subsequently revealed 93,220 rand in cash on the traveler, nearly €4,500. Investigators are now trying to determine the origin of this money and its possible link to the item found inside the doll.
The woman was immediately arrested. She faces a drug possession charge. Money laundering proceedings have also been initiated due to the amount of cash found on her.
A hiding place reminiscent of other unusual seizures
Smugglers regularly use ordinary objects to try to evade security checks. But detection equipment and baggage inspections sometimes reveal hiding places that are difficult to spot with the naked eye.
This new case is reminiscent of the arrest of a grandmother with cocaine hidden in plantain peels. In another recent case, a Nigerian influencer was arrested after a cocaine seizure estimated at $28 million.
In the case of Bloemfontein, the doll's head was not simply a toy. It was a training tool used in salons or hairdressing schools to teach braiding, cutting, or applying extensions. Its internal volume would have allowed the stones to be hidden under moss.
The investigation was entrusted to a specialized unit
The case concerning possible money laundering must be examined by the Priority Criminal Investigations Directorate, the South African unit specializing in complex cases. The analyses will also need to confirm the exact nature of the seized substance.
The suspect is due to appear before the Bloemfontein District Court soon. At this stage, she benefits from the presumption of innocence and no conviction has been handed down.
The case is noteworthy because of the quantity of stones involved, but especially because of the chosen hiding place. Without the scanner's alert, the mannequin head could have easily been mistaken for a simple hair accessory in the luggage of an ordinary passenger.
