Afrique du Sud : le président souffrant après le sommet des Brics
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has cancelled his public engagements after returning to the BRICS summit in India due to health problems, his office announced Wednesday.
The 73-year-old head of state returned to South Africa on Monday and his doctors advised him to rest and recover, the presidency said in a statement.
"When possible, the president has asked the relevant ministers to represent him at planned engagements," she said.
The leaders of the BRICS bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, concluded a two-day summit in New Delhi on Sunday, where discussions focused on inclusive global growth and the Middle East.
Mr. Ramaphosa's absence comes as Vice President Paul Mashatile continues to recover from a minor medical procedure. The country thus finds itself with its two highest-ranking political leaders sidelined from their public duties.
"My recovery is progressing well" and "I am gaining strength every day," Mr. Mashatile assured on Tuesday.
The simultaneous absence of the president and vice-president comes as South Africa enters an increasingly busy political period in the lead-up to the November 4 local elections.
