Algérie: arrestation de 61 Marocains soupçonnés de préparer des "actes de sabotage"
Algerian authorities announced on Sunday that they had arrested 61 people of Moroccan nationality in early October, suspecting them of planning "acts of sabotage" on the territory.
In a statement relayed by public media, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) referred to "a Moroccan international criminal network" but did not give details on the actions it was allegedly planning.
The 61 people, including a former soldier in the Moroccan army, "were preparing to commit acts of sabotage that would undermine security and public order in the country," she said.
The DGSN stated that these people had landed in Tunisia and then reached Algeria by using mountain tracks.
Relations between Algeria and Morocco have been highly strained for years. In 2021, Algiers severed diplomatic ties with its neighbor.
The two countries are particularly at odds over the issue of Western Sahara, which Rabat considers an integral part of its territory while Algiers supports the Polisario Front and the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people.
In addition to these disputes, there are reciprocal accusations of interference, security disputes, and the closure of the land border since 1994.
