Deposed on August 30, 2023, by soldiers led by Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma, then head of the Republican Guard, Ali Bongo left Gabon on the night of May 15-16, 2025, with his family. He has since lived in exile in London, United Kingdom. He recently gave an interview to the Gabonese media outlet Infos241.
"Given his service record, who wouldn't have been surprised…"
In this interview, he discusses his ties with Oligui Nguéma and his surprise at learning that it was Nguéma who was leading the coup plotters.
“He served my father before me, and then he served me in turn. Naturally, I trusted him and his uniform. Given his service record, who wouldn’t have been surprised by the events that unfolded? However, I’ve never been one to take things personally. His actions speak for themselves. History and the Gabonese people will judge them,” said the 67-year-old former leader.
