Coupures intempestives d’électricité en Gambie : La colère gronde dans les rues, le président Barrow fait une promesse
Recurring power cuts in The Gambia are infuriating residents of the country's main cities. Many took to the streets of Banjul on Monday evening, carrying candles to express their frustration and chanting slogans like "Nawec, give us back our electricity!"
Nawec is the state-owned company that distributes water and electricity in the country. According to "The Voice Gambia," the protesters were led by MP Modou Lamin B. Bah.
Violence reported in Greater Banjul
He called on the government to take urgent measures to restore a stable and reliable electricity supply, stating that prolonged power cuts are disrupting households, businesses and essential services.
According to the news site The Point, the protests turned violent in Greater Banjul. Angry youths reportedly set fire to tires and looted shops. The local Nawec office in Latrikunda was even vandalized, according to the source.
"It's time to act."
While visiting the Brikama and Kotu power plants yesterday, Tuesday, Gambian President Adama Barrow acknowledged that the situation required immediate action.
"This is no longer the time to talk theory. It is time to act. What we want is for the electricity to be restored," said the State House occupant, before urging his compatriots to be patient.
"This problem is temporary and will be resolved," he promised, while warning against street protests.
In a speech delivered later that evening, he assured that the country's electricity supply would improve by the end of October 2026.
