Accidental crude oil spill in Niger: The spill has already been contained, a relief well will soon be drilled

In Niger, the Minister of Petroleum, Hamadou Tini, and his colleague from the Ministry of the Environment, Maizama Abdoulaye, held a press conference this Tuesday, October 20, at the Ministry of Petroleum headquarters in Niamey. The agenda for this information session included their planned visit to the Goumeri W-8 oil well on October 14, 2026.

This oil platform was the site of an accidental crude oil spill last September.

According to the two government officials, technicians from the China National Petroleum Corporation (the company that operates the well) managed to contain the spill of crude oil.

Securing the site, decontaminating the soil, restoring the affected environments

Currently, the operational priority is the construction of a Goumeri W-8 R directional relief well. To date, the drilling platform is 100% complete and the necessary equipment is already on site. Drilling operations are planned from October 24 to December 26, 2026, according to the previously communicated schedule.

The two ministers indicated that this timetable "does not constitute a guarantee of control of the eruption within this timeframe".

It will therefore be necessary to rigorously ensure the security of the site, the decontamination of the soils, the restoration of the affected environments and the monitoring of water quality.

To establish an economic and environmental assessment to document the extent of the damage

The compensation for damages suffered by the population must also be rigorously monitored by the competent services, in compliance with applicable obligations, stressed the ministers of oil and environment of Niger.

Furthermore, a comprehensive economic and environmental assessment will need to be carried out in order to document the extent of the damage and the necessary remediation measures.
