Ghana: Pregnant woman shot dead after being mistaken for an animal

A tragedy of rare violence has shaken the community of Huniso, near Bogoso. Yaa Karim, a 33-year-old pregnant woman, tragically lost her life after being shot twice by two teenagers who apparently mistook her for a wild animal.

The incident occurred while Yaa Karim was in the bush, on farmland on the outskirts of Huniso, collecting firewood. According to initial reports, the woman in her thirties was peacefully working when she was suddenly struck by fatal gunfire.

The two teenagers, armed with a firearm, reportedly spotted movement through the dense vegetation. Convinced it was a deer, they opened fire twice without checking their target. It was only upon approaching that they discovered the horrifying truth: the victim was not game, but a pregnant woman who had been critically wounded.

The pain is immense for the victim's loved ones. Lydia Abanga, the deceased's sister, spoke emotionally about this tragic loss. According to her statements, one of the shooters is 18 years old, while the other is even younger.

"It's an indescribable horror. She had simply gone to collect wood to provide for her family," testifies a shocked relative.

Overcome with remorse or aware of the gravity of their actions, the two teenagers turned themselves in to the police. Authorities immediately launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy, particularly regarding the possession and use of the weapon by these young people.

The suspects should be brought before the court as soon as the preliminary procedures are finalized.
