Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya has dismissed more than 170 soldiers and gendarmes from the army for "desertion", according to a decree read on public television.

No details have been given about the facts related to this "desertion" of 173 soldiers and gendarmes, among whom is Commander Michel Lamah, a former member of the Special Forces Group, a corps from which General Mamadi Doumbouya comes.

In September 2021, at the head of the men of this Group, Mamadi Doumbouya, then a colonel and later self-promoted to general, stormed the presidential palace and overthrew the elected president Alpha Condé, who had been in power for more than 10 years.

General Doumbouya was subsequently elected president in December 2025, in an election rigged in his favor. The president's movement and its allied parties then won over 80% of the parliamentary seats in the legislative elections of May 31st.

"The 173 military personnel whose first and last names follow are removed from the armed forces for desertion," states the decree read Monday evening on RTG (public television) by General Amara Camara, Minister-Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic and spokesperson for the same institution.

Commander Lamah was among the Special Forces members who arrested President Condé. In a photo taken at the time of the September 2021 coup, he is in a vehicle in the back seat of which the former head of state is being arrested.

General Doumbouya has ruled Guinea with an iron fist since the 2021 coup.

In recent years, several political parties have been suspended, demonstrations - banned since 2022 - have been repressed and many opposition and civil society leaders have been arrested, convicted or forced into exile.
