Guinée : les avocats d'un ex-magistrat détenu signalent qu'il n'est "plus dans sa cellule"
Lawyers for a prominent magistrate in Guinea, recently dismissed, charged with suspected collusion with an opponent and detained, reported on Saturday that their client was "no longer in his cell" and are concerned about not knowing his place of detention.
Since General Mamadi Doumbouya came to power through a coup in 2021 and then an election in 2025, political parties have been suspended, demonstrations have been repressed and many dissenting voices have been arrested, convicted, forced into exile or have disappeared.
Magistrate Algassimou Diallo is being prosecuted for "incitement to discrimination, hatred or violence for discrimination" and "criminal association".
He was being held in Coyah prison, near Conakry, and his trial opened on Friday before the Supreme Court, before being postponed until Tuesday.
"Mr. Algassimou Diallo has not been in his cell since this morning. He has reportedly been taken from his place of detention and led to an unknown destination," his lawyers, who are working together as a group, warned in a statement published on Saturday.
"The judicial authorities contacted say they know nothing about it and the steps taken with the prison establishment have remained unanswered," they stated.
They add that "no extraction order has been brought to the attention of the defense" and that "no medical reason can, in any case, explain such a release from the detention center".
"Neither his family nor his advisors know where he is," they assert.
The group of lawyers expresses its "deepest concerns for the life, safety and physical integrity of its client".
He asks the authorities "that the whereabouts of Mr. Algassimou Diallo be immediately brought to the attention of his family and his counsel, and that they be able to meet with him without delay."
"Otherwise, the group will appeal to the relevant national and international bodies," he warns.
The citizen movement "Turn the Page-Guinea" (TLP-Guinea) also demanded on Saturday that the authorities "immediately locate Mr. Algassimou Diallo and communicate his situation to his family and lawyers".
TLP-Guinea is more broadly "concerned about a possible trivialization of the disappearances of people under the responsibility of the State".
The movement, which says it has documented at least 35 cases of disappearances since September 2021, also recalls the recent discovery of six bound bodies in a mass grave in the southwest of the country, for which an opposition group has appealed to the UN and called for an independent international investigation.
