« Jammeh les aurait tous abattus » : Adama Barrow évoque la marche aux chandelles vers la State House
In The Gambia, President Adama Barrow was far from pleased with the recent candlelight vigil held in the capital, Banjul, last September. Speaking at the Arch of Remembrance on October 19, 2026, the head of State House strongly condemned the march against power cuts, which had culminated at the presidential palace.
"They have committed a very serious crime. It is an act of treason."
He particularly targeted MP Momodou Lamin Bah, who was leading the protest movement.
“There is a problem we need to address. A month ago, your MP for North Banjul mobilized children. They lit candles and tried to go to State House to protest, because, according to them, Banjul had been without electricity for 24 or 48 hours. They committed a very serious crime. It is an act of treason because you don't target the presidential residence. If it had been President Jammeh at the presidential residence, he would have shot them all,” the Gambian leader asserted.
"We will subject him to a fate he will never forget."
He then warned the MP against organizing a similar demonstration in the future.
“We are warning him: this is the last time. If he returns, I swear he won’t do it again. We will make him suffer a fate he will never forget. Tolerance is not synonymous with fear. If I had been afraid, I would not have confronted former President Yahya Jammeh. This is a final warning. If he tries this again, I swear he won’t do it again,” Adama Barrow threatened.
"We were carrying candles, not weapons."
MP Momodou Lamin Bah was quick to react, denouncing the threats made by the president against him.
“My only fault was to have better represented my people and to have led the very first peaceful candlelight protest in the city of Banjul. It was a peaceful, legal, and dignified gathering of ordinary Gambians demanding honesty, dignity, and respect in governance. We carried candles, not weapons. To be threatened by the head of state for such an act is deeply disappointing and dangerously disconnected from the democracy for which we have all fought,” the parliamentarian said.
He added that he would hold President Barrow personally responsible if any harm was caused to him or his family members.
