Journée de l'union Africaine : l'institution appelle à une Afrique plus unie et influente
On the occasion of African Union Day, celebrated on September 9, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, called on the people of Africa and the diaspora to renew their commitment to Pan-Africanism, unity, and solidarity. This date commemorates the 1999 Sirte Declaration, considered a major step towards the creation of the African Union.
In his message, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf notably praised the African initiative led by Togo and supported by the AU for a more accurate cartographic representation of the continent's surface area. He believes that this approach goes beyond the issue of maps and reflects the desire of Africans to reclaim control of the narratives that define their continent.
He reiterated that Agenda 2063 remains the roadmap for building "the Africa we want." He also emphasized the need to improve living conditions for the population, particularly through sustainable access to water and sanitation.
He called on states, institutions, the private sector, civil society, women and young people to continue building a more integrated, confident Africa capable of forging its own destiny.
