Le Bénin redevient pays producteur de pétrole : 250 000 barils mis sur le marché en octobre
This is rather good news for Benin's oil industry. According to the public service newspaper La Nation, the country will put 250,000 barrels of crude oil on the international market next October.
This first shipment comes from the Sèmè offshore field, operated by Akrake Petroleum Benin, a subsidiary of Singapore's Rex International Holding. The company's daily production is approximately 3,000 barrels, which is quite modest.
Akrake Petroleum Benin hopes to gradually reach a production of 5000 or even 6000 barrels per day in the coming years.
A production of 3000 barrels per day
As a reminder, it was in March 2026 that the operator announced the successful drilling of the AK-2H well currently in operation.
The well had been drilled through 1405 meters of reservoir. This allowed for the identification of approximately 950 meters of hydrocarbon-saturated sandstone.
Initial production was estimated at 15,000 barrels per day. Ultimately, it was only 3,000 barrels.
The Renaissance
It is important to point out that oil had already been discovered on the Sèmè offshore field in the 1980s. Its exploitation had made it possible to produce approximately 22 million barrels between 1982 and 1998. We are therefore witnessing a restart of oil production in Benin.
