L'Union africaine rend hommage à l’écrivain sénégalais Cheikh Hamidou Kane
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, paid tribute to the Senegalese writer and intellectual Cheikh Hamidou Kane, who recently passed away.
In a statement, he paid tribute to the memory of a "giant of African literature," whose novel Ambiguous Adventure profoundly influenced the continent's literature. Through the character of Samba Diallo, the work explores, in particular, the encounter of cultures, education, and the tensions between tradition and modernity.
The AU also highlights the career of Cheikh Hamidou Kane as a senior civil servant, who held several positions in Senegal, including governor of Thiès and minister, before pursuing an international career with UNICEF and the International Development Research Centre.
For Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the writer thus dedicated his life to thought, transmission, and the development of Africa. He offered his condolences to his family, the Senegalese people, and the entire African literary and cultural community.
