Lutte contre les MGF : L’AJS réaffirme sa solidarité aux acteurs engagés contre les mutilations génitales féminines au Mali
The Association of Senegalese Jurists (AJS) sent a letter of solidarity to Malian organizations committed to fighting against female genital mutilation (FGM).
In a statement released today, the AJS reaffirmed its support for the campaign to eliminate this practice. For the AJS, FGM "cannot be considered a mere cultural or social practice."
According to President Aminata Fall Niang, female genital mutilation constitutes a violation of human rights and seriously undermines fundamental rights, security, dignity, physical and psychological integrity, the health of women and girls, as well as equality between women and men.
Call for collective mobilization
For the AJS, the elimination of FGM requires a collective, sustainable and coordinated mobilization involving civil society, public authorities, legal and health professionals, community leaders, the media and communities.
The association reaffirms its commitment to international and regional commitments, including CEDAW, the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the Maputo Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa.
The AJS also welcomes the essential role played by African women lawyers' associations in advocating for the strengthening of legal frameworks, access to justice for survivors and the transformation of social norms.
A human rights-based approach
According to the AJS, the fight must be based on prevention, support for survivors, prosecution of perpetrators, education, awareness-raising and community empowerment.
The association also remains available to strengthen collaborative ties with AJM through the sharing of experiences, joint advocacy actions, awareness-raising and capacity building of stakeholders.
"At this time when our continent is continuing its efforts to end FGM, it is more necessary than ever to make a strong, united and determined African voice heard," the statement emphasizes.
Finally, AJS reiterates its full solidarity and commitment to continue, alongside Malian organizations, the fight for the elimination of FGM for the protection and promotion of the rights of women and girls in Africa.

À les entendre, chez eux, il n’y a que mariages forcés, violences conjugales, mutilations génitales, viols.
Elles savent le discours que les autres ont envie d’entendre et elles le répètent.
