Malawi : un instituteur simule sa mort pour éviter de rembourser un prêt bancaire
A schoolteacher from the Kasungu district in Malawi has taken audacity to its extreme.
A bizarre and improbable scam is currently shaking the Kasungu region. To escape monthly payments and reminders from his bank, a primary school teacher devised a radical scheme: to orchestrate his own administrative death.
Trapped by significant financial debt, the man fabricated an official medical file and death certificate. These falsified documents, once submitted to the bank, officially attested to his death.
Moved by the apparent tragedy that had befallen their client's family, the bank's management showed compassion by deciding to write off the entire debt and cancel the existing loan agreement. The teacher then thought he had finally put his financial worries behind him.
The story could have ended there, but that was without taking into account the con man's amnesia or audacity. Four years after being declared dead by the banking services, the schoolteacher, short of cash, walked through the door of the very same bank branch.
Presenting his identity document calmly, he submitted a new loan application.
It was during the entry of his personal information that the trap was sprung: the establishment's computer system immediately issued a red alert, indicating that the applicant had been listed as deceased for several years.
Alerted by this anomaly and recognizing the face of the "deceased," the bank employees discreetly notified the authorities. The man was arrested on the spot by local police. He is now being prosecuted for forgery, use of forged official documents, and insurance/banking fraud.
