Mali : 20 ans de prison pour le colonel Alpha Yaya Sangaré, auteur d’un livre critique sur l’armée
Imprisoned since March 2024 for publishing at the end of 2023 "Mali: The Challenge of Terrorism in Africa", a book in which some passages accuse the Army of abuses against civilian populations, Colonel Alpha Yaya Sangaré was sentenced this Thursday, September 3, to 20 years in prison by the Bamako Military Court.
He was being prosecuted for "treason", "undermining the credit of the State" and "spreading false news attributed to third parties, likely to undermine the discipline of the Armed and Security Forces".
The prosecution had requested the death penalty against him.
During his closed-door trial, Colonel Alpha Yaya Sangaré never admitted to the charges against him. His lawyer pleaded for acquittal. The prosecution, for its part, requested the death penalty.
The judge clearly did not follow the prosecution's recommendations, as he sentenced the accused to 20 years in prison. Alpha Yaya Sangaré had already been discharged from the Malian Armed Forces in December 2025.
