Mali : Les chirurgiens du CHU Gabriel Touré de Bamako réalisent une prouesse scientifique
This is excellent news for medicine in Mali. Medical teams at Gabriel Touré Hospital in Bamako have successfully separated conjoined twins. The surgery was performed in early September on the babies, who were born on August 29, 2026, following a cesarean section on their mother, whose pregnancy had reached full term with known malformations.
The infants were connected by a common urinary and digestive system. They therefore shared the same bladder and colon.
"A scientific achievement"
Having been informed of the success of this surgical intervention, the Minister of Health, Colonel-Major Assa Badiallo Touré, visited the Gabriel Touré University Hospital on the morning of Wednesday, September 9, to inquire about the health of the newborns.
"We are gathered here today for a happy event, a scientific achievement by our practitioners within the great family of the Gabriel Touré University Hospital...Such an intervention is truly a feat," the authority declared before recalling the particularly rare nature of conjoined twin births.
She finally congratulated, on behalf of the highest authorities of the country, the intervention team (made up of pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists-resuscitators, cardiologists, radiologists, pharmacists, laboratory technicians and paramedical staff of the operating room) and all the agents of the Gabriel Touré University Hospital.
