Mutinerie à la base 101 de Niamey au Niger : La réaction de la Russie
Niamey, the capital of Niger, was the scene of a mutiny on the night of Friday, August 28 to Saturday, August 29, 2026. Indeed, "a group of soldiers in breach of military regulations undertook to sequester some of their comrades in the barracks of air base 101 in Niamey and to carry out firing on some sensitive sites in the city of Niamey."
"The prompt reaction of the defense and security forces made it possible to contain this movement of mood and to gradually regain control of these sites," said Niger's Defense Minister Salifou Mody, in a statement read on state television.
The mutineers' attacks were "repelled by national forces with the support of the Africa Corps military."
In a statement released yesterday, Sunday, August 30, Russia, a strategic defense partner of Niger, expressed its solidarity with the people of Niger following the mutiny. It reported that the mutineers' attacks were "repelled by national forces with the support of soldiers from the Africa Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defense."
The statement published on the pages of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued, "The situation is (now) under the control of the legitimate authorities headed by General Abdourahmane Tiani, President of the Republic, Head of State."
Moscow wants Niger, as well as the entire Confederation of Sahel States of which it is a part, to continue to strengthen their sovereignty and development in a peaceful manner.
He pledges to continue "supporting his Nigerien friends in the fight against extremists, especially those incited by former European metropolises."
