Niger : Révélations sur la tentative de « coup d’État »
Niger awoke on Saturday to the sound of gunfire. Authorities reported a mutiny within the Nigerien Armed Forces (FAN). According to information reported by Jeune Afrique, the mutiny was led by soldiers from various regions of the country.
The first clashes
The first skirmishes reportedly broke out late Friday evening on the road linking the capital to Ouallam, located about 100 kilometers to the north. Sporadic fighting reportedly pitted units responsible for the defense of Niamey against soldiers of the Armed Forces who were traveling in a convoy towards the city center.
The presidency targeted
The clashes then reportedly spread to several strategic points in Niamey. Gunfire was heard near the presidential palace, which the mutineers allegedly attempted to storm before being repelled by the military personnel responsible for the security of President Abdourahamane Tiani, according to Jeune Afrique.
Intense fighting at the airport
Also, in the airport area, fighting reportedly centered around Air Base 101, which houses army drones and a large contingent of Russian Afrika Korps soldiers, as well as a small contingent of Italian troops, according to Jeune Afrique. Around midday, the mutineers reportedly seized control of part of Base 101, where they are said to be entrenched.
National television and radio
The mutineers also reportedly attempted to seize the public television station, but were unsuccessful. National radio continued to broadcast only music. The national television signal was cut before being restored around 11:00 GMT.
Young mutineers from Tillabéri
According to Jeune Afrique, this attempted power grab is being led by young officers commanding units based in several cities across the country. Members of the Special Forces are also reportedly involved in the mutiny. The units involved are said to have come from Tillabéri and Dosso, west of Niamey.

Un accord entre Washington et Caracas donne aux Etats-Unis le contrôle sur 65 milliards de barils des réserves vénézuéliennes pour développer « 17 champs stratégiques » moyennant un investissement de « plus de 100 milliards de dollars ».
