Nigeria : 48 morts après des intoxications à l'alcool frelaté
Forty-eight people have died in Nigeria in recent weeks after drinking alcoholic beverages adulterated with methanol, the Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) announced on Saturday.
The poisonings, which also made 182 people ill, affected three districts in Ondo State, in southwestern Nigeria.
The victims had been drinking a homemade beverage, locally known as "Monkey Tail".
Fifteen people involved in the production and sale of this drink have been arrested, the Agency said.
Laboratory tests revealed "high concentrations of methanol", a highly toxic substance used as a solvent or antifreeze, and Indian hemp.
Five people became totally blind and two partially blind after drinking this adulterated beverage.
