Nigeria : "des dizaines" de mineurs présumés illégaux meurent après leur arrestation
Dozens of suspected illegal miners died after being arrested by a law enforcement body in Nigeria, the Civil Defence, police announced Thursday.
The police chief of Niger State (central Nigeria) "ordered the immediate opening of an investigation into the regrettable deaths of suspected illegal minors in the detention center" of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), according to a statement.
Civil Defence supports the police in ensuring security, protecting sensitive national assets and infrastructure.
The police and Civil Defence have not given a precise figure, but local media have reported a death toll of 33.
Civil Defense officials stated that they apprehended "dozens of suspected illegal minors" on Tuesday and Wednesday. "During the night of September 17, 2026, dozens of detained suspects were found dead, following a suspected outbreak of disease," they added.
An intelligence report seen by AFP indicates that "preliminary information suggests the deaths may be due to overcrowding and inadequate ventilation within a detention center."
