Nigeria : enquête sur de supposés tests de virginité pratiqués sur des collégiennes
Authorities in southern Nigeria have launched an investigation following reports that 16 schoolgirls were subjected to virginity tests, allegedly ordered by a traditional chief.
The incident reportedly took place at a school in Rivers State, in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, where girls were allegedly persuaded to take the tests with promises of scholarships and free books, according to the Ministry of Education.
Such incidents are rare in Nigeria, where traditional chiefs often wield significant power.
Some rural areas in the south have also conducted campaigns in recent years to combat female genital mutilation.
"Sixteen (16) female students were allegedly selected for the exercise," the Ministry of Education said in a statement dated Thursday, describing the allegations as "extremely serious and concerning."
According to the ministry, individuals claiming to represent a traditional monarch visited Khana Public School in Rivers State last month and selected girls for tests. It did not specify how these tests were conducted.
In 2012, a school principal was suspended and arrested by police in Ogun State (southwest) after being accused of subjecting 10 students to similar tests.
