Nigeria : une vingtaine de morts dans deux attaques
Around twenty people, including eight soldiers and a policeman, were killed by gunmen in two separate attacks this weekend in northwestern and central Nigeria, residents and humanitarian sources told AFP on Monday.
Gangs specializing in kidnapping for ransom and cattle rustling, locally known as "bandits", as well as jihadist groups, have recently intensified their attacks in these regions of Nigeria.
"Bandits" killed 13 people on Sunday, including eight soldiers and a policeman, after ambushing a convoy of traders heading to a local market in the Bukkuyum district of Zamfara state in the northwest of the country, three residents told AFP.
The convoy was coming from Gwashi and heading towards Gurusu to go to the weekly market in Nasarawa village when the "bandits" opened fire, the sources said.
"The bandits killed 13 people in this ambush, including eight soldiers, a policeman and four traders, among them a woman," said Lawal Muhammad, a local leader in Bukkuyum.
Eleven people, including three soldiers, were also injured and taken to hospital for treatment, he added.
The attackers ransacked the vehicles and looted the goods before setting fire to three vehicles in the convoy, said Jamilu Umar, a resident of Bukkuyum who confirmed the toll.
Al-Mustapha Muhammad, another resident of Bukkuyum who also gave the same assessment, explained that the road linking Gwashi to Gurusa had "become a nightmare for travelers".
In another attack carried out between Saturday and Sunday, Lakurawa jihadists killed 11 people after invading the community of Kigbera, in the Borgu district, in Niger State (central Niger), near the border with Benin, two humanitarian sources said.
"The terrorists in Lakurawa killed 11 people, including four members of a militia tasked with ensuring the security of the village," a humanitarian source said.
The attack forced residents to flee to neighbouring Benin for fear of further attacks, another local humanitarian source said, confirming the death toll.
Communities in Niger State, an agricultural region rich in minerals, continue to desert their homes as bandits and jihadists intensify their deadly raids.
