Nuit de tirs à Niamey au Niger : Le message des militaires au pouvoir
What is happening in Niger now? During the night from Friday to Saturday, heavy gunfire and loud explosions were heard in several districts of Niamey, particularly in the area of Hamani Diori airport and in the 2nd district, where the Presidential Palace is located.
According to AFP, "insurgents from the armed forces" reportedly tried unsuccessfully to "enter the presidential palace." Exchanges of fire are still ongoing.
"In the face of current events, let's remain calm..."
In a message posted on its Facebook page, the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), the ruling body, called on the population to remain calm.
"In the face of current events, let us remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. Our defense and security forces are mobilized for the defense of the homeland. Let us remain united and vigilant," the publication states.
It is worth recalling that the military currently in power deposed the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, 2023. Since then, he has still not been free to move about.
