Serigne Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy Al Amine argues for an intellectual reinterpretation of the work of Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy

Invited to the program "Le Jury du dimanche" (JDD) on iRadio, Serigne Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy Al Amine called for moving beyond the purely emotional dimension of Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy's legacy to better rediscover its intellectual and spiritual depth. According to him, the popular fervor that accompanies major religious events should not obscure "the knowledge behind it all," particularly the writings and teachings of the founder of the Tijaniyya order in Senegal. " Have we ourselves, as his heirs, not sinned by focusing so much more on the emotional aspects? " he asked.

Serigne Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy Al Amine particularly emphasizes the profoundly educational nature of Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy's work. He notes that the religious guide not only transmitted oral teachings through his conduct, but also wrote "for his contemporaries, but also for posterity." Through major works such as the Khatimatu-l-Murid and the Faqatou Talib , he sees a true method of spiritual education, addressing in particular the conduct of the disciple, the aspirant, the muqaddam , and the sheikh, as well as the practices of the path.

But in his view, Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy's legacy extends beyond mere spiritual training. Serigne Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy Al Amine also presents him as a prominent observer and social reformer, capable of critically examining the failings of his time's society. " The Sheikh is a social reformer ," he emphasizes, recalling that his writings also contained an uncompromising critique of certain social practices and, at times, the deviant behavior of some marabouts.

For the guest of the JDD, this critical dimension is fully part of the legacy left by Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy. A legacy which, beyond fervor and emotional attachment, above all invites us to return to the texts, the knowledge, and the ethical and spiritual teachings that underpin his work.
