Xénophobie en Afrique du Sud : Accra rejette 1,8 million de dollars de l'entreprise sud-africaine MTN
The Ghanaian government has officially declined a $20 million donation offer from mobile phone operator MTN Ghana. This sum was intended to support Ghanaian citizens affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
In an official statement published on August 26, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised the company's generosity while explaining the reasons for its refusal. The administration stated that it had already mobilized the necessary financial resources to ensure the emergency repatriation and social reintegration of all its citizens affected by the violence.
This official position had already been communicated privately to the chairman of the board of directors of MTN, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, as well as to the CEO of the group, during an audience granted on August 14 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
While reaffirming its commitment to maintaining a business climate favorable to foreign investors and international companies operating in Ghana, the government insists that the protection and assistance of citizens is primarily a national responsibility.
To ensure full transparency, the ministry has committed to publishing a detailed financial report detailing all costs related to the evacuation operations as soon as they are completed.
