In Senegal, does domestic violence have a gender, and does outrage have a direction of travel? In Sam Ndiaye, in the commune of Fandène, 40-year-old Cheikhou Omar Ndiaye lost his life in tragic circumstances, stabbed in his sleep by his wife, the alleged murderer, according to press reports. He left behind six children. A grieving family. And a troubling question: is silence more comfortable when the victim is a man?
Let's imagine for a moment the reverse scenario. A woman killed by her husband. Press releases would pour in, microphones would crackle, and TV studios would erupt in outrage. Rightly so! But when a man dies at the hands of his alleged partner, the public outrage sometimes seems to struggle to find its footing. The signal is clearly weak.
Let's be clear, this isn't about pitting suffering against suffering or downplaying the widespread and well-documented violence against women. Even less is it about turning a tragedy into a trial of feminists. Justice isn't a friendly football match where each side demands a penalty kick.
But empathy cannot be a favor granted based on gender. A male victim is neither less human nor less deserving of compassion. It's just that, in our society, masculinity often dictates silence: a man must endure, grit his teeth, and maintain appearances. Until tragedy speaks for itself.
The fight against domestic violence deserves better than selective outrage. Protecting women does not mean making men invisible. And defending men does not mean minimizing women's suffering.
A life has no gender. Neither does justice. As for indignation, it would benefit from moving beyond double standards: compassion is not a private club.
