[Billet] Le peuple a faim, les politiciens ont toujours faim… de pouvoir
Senegalese people are tired. Tired of chasing prices that have decided to sprint. Meat? Now you practically have to make an appointment with the butcher. A kilo of beef is flirting with 5,200 to 5,500 CFA francs. Fish, meanwhile, is playing hide-and-seek. As for other products, they've gone up in price while wages, poor things, remain stuck on the ground floor.
And now fuel prices are also getting a little "adjustment." In Senegal, when prices go up, they don't say "increase." They say "adjustment." It sounds nicer, but it's much harder on the wallet.
The gorgorlu now calculates like an accountant: "If I buy the meat, I negotiate the fuel and I walk to work." Even the family budget has started to have trust issues.
But while the consumer is looking for ways to fill their shopping cart, our dear politicians are looking for ways to fill the electoral lists.
Some, like Kiiraay, are mobilizing, remobilizing, and remobilizing again to retain power. Others, affiliated with Pastef, are ramping up their recruitment drives to prepare for a major comeback. March 2024, the date of the last political transition, already seems a distant memory. Everyone has put their campaign boots back on, as if the election were scheduled for next Sunday.
Meanwhile, the people are not thinking about coalitions, majorities, or reconquest. They are thinking about the cooking pot.
They dream of power. The people dream of being able to eat.
And in this Senegal where politics is everywhere, one very simple question remains: when will the day come when the average household's shopping basket weighs more than the electoral calendar?
