Senegal aims to accelerate the development of its aquaculture sector. In Bohol, in the Dagana department, the Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Amy Mara Dièye, inaugurated a fish feed manufacturing plant on Wednesday, August 13, 2026. The ceremony also marked the official launch of the Aquagef 360 program, presented as a new tool to support young people and women in the aquaculture sector.
For the minister, this infrastructure goes far beyond a simple industrial investment. According to her, it represents "another building block" in the construction of Senegal's food sovereignty. The factory is expected to help reduce the country's dependence on imported fish feed and allow producers to better control their costs.
“This factory is much more than an industrial investment,” emphasized Amy Mara Dièye, believing it reflects the State’s desire to better control the aquaculture value chain. Through this project, the government aims to increase local production, process a larger share of national production, and create more value and jobs.
For a long time, Senegalese aquaculture faced a heavy dependence on imported feed. The commissioning of this production unit should help reverse this trend.
According to the minister, the availability of locally produced feed will allow farmers to access an essential input at more controlled costs and, consequently, improve the competitiveness of their operations. The objective is also to foster the development of a genuine national value chain for aquaculture.
This dynamic is based on three priorities highlighted by the minister: strengthening food sovereignty, creating jobs and opportunities for youth and women, and building an economy more based on national production.
Aquagef 360 to support young people and women
The Bohol ceremony also served as the setting for the official launch of the Aquagef 360 program. This aims to support a new generation of entrepreneurs in the various sectors of aquaculture, both in freshwater and marine environments.
Through this program, the authorities wish to give young people and women more means to undertake, invest and develop income-generating activities in the sector.
The minister thus stressed the need to foster entrepreneurs capable of creating value and jobs while contributing to the economic development of their territories.
The Senegal River Valley, a future aquaculture hub
Amy Mara Dièye also believes that the Senegal River Valley has many advantages to become one of the country's main aquaculture hubs. According to her, the availability of water and the agricultural potential of this area can foster the development of an integrated sector that creates opportunities for the local population.
The minister also praised the partnership between the State, the National Aquaculture Agency and the Atlantic Mariculture Company, considering that collaboration between the public sector and private investors is essential to strengthening the country's economic sovereignty.
This approach is in line with the government's stated commitment to making aquaculture a priority sector, through the modernization of infrastructure, improved access to financing, capacity building for stakeholders and the creation of high-performing aquaculture hubs.
Heading towards SIAC Dakar 2026
Another announcement made during the ceremony was the organization of the International Aquaculture Exhibition (SIAC) Dakar 2026, scheduled for October 6-8 in Dakar. The event is intended to allow Senegal to showcase its expertise and strengthen its position in the African aquaculture sector.
The minister invited local authorities, young people, women, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers and professional organizations to take part in this dynamic.
With the Bohol factory, the launch of Aquagef 360 and the announcement of SIAC Dakar 2026, Senegal intends to give new impetus to its aquaculture and make it a lever for food sovereignty, employment and economic growth.
