Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor: The SAES decrees a total suspension of activities

The social situation is once again tense within higher education. Meeting in a general assembly this Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the Coordination of the Autonomous Union of Higher Education (SAES) at Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor (UASZ) took the drastic decision to suspend all its teaching and administrative activities. The reason for this is the non-payment of October 2026 salaries to teaching and research staff.

Faced with what it describes as a recurring, worrying, and unacceptable situation, the union deplores the persistent uncertainty surrounding the payment of salaries for teaching and research staff. Forcefully reiterating that salary is a fundamental right and not a privilege, the SAES insists on the need for regular and timely payment.

While reaffirming their total commitment to their teaching, research and community service missions, the members of the PER believe that they can no longer sustainably honor their professional obligations without receiving in return the emoluments that are legitimately due to them.

Therefore, the SAES-UASZ Coordination has decreed a total halt to classes and administrative tasks from Monday, November 2, 2026, starting at 8 a.m., until the effective and full payment of the salaries for the month of October 2026.

A firm appeal has also been made to all activists for strict adherence to this instruction, which will now be systematically applied from the first working day of each month in the event of a new malfunction.
