Hausse en vue des prix du carburant : ce que le gouvernement doit faire pour faire passer la pilule
Oil expert Ibrahima Bachir Dramé is adamant: with the soaring price of a barrel of oil following the war in the Middle East, fuel price increases are inevitable in Senegal. "Moving towards true pricing is practically unavoidable," he told L'Observateur.
On the international market, the price of diesel has risen sharply twice since January. The price per liter first jumped from 791 to 984 before climbing to 1433 CFA francs. Meanwhile, in Senegal, the same fuel has remained stuck at 680 CFA francs per liter since the fuel price reduction announced on December 6th. "The government is subsidizing diesel by up to 753 CFA francs per liter to maintain the price at the pump and prevent the public from having to pay the true cost," reports L'Observateur.
“We cannot indefinitely compensate for a structural rise in international prices,” declares Ibrahima Bachir Dramé, believing that the true cost of energy will be applied sooner or later. “The real question is: how do we do it?” suggests the oil expert. He answers: “A gradual approach will be necessary, accompanied by targeted social measures to protect vulnerable households and strategic sectors. A rise in energy prices has a domino effect on the entire economy: transportation, food, production. Therefore, there is a real risk of inflation. Hence the importance of intelligent support from the government to prevent a decline in purchasing power.”
