Première femme à la tête du concours : Amina Badiane, l’ancienne top-modèle qui réinvente Miss Sénégal
Amina Badiane is no stranger to Senegalese people. A guest on the program Sitöé , which celebrates female leadership, the first woman to head the Miss Senegal Committee after Moïse Ambroise Gomis's 26-year reign, she shared her story. In this interview, the former international supermodel reflected on a career marked by runways in Milan and contracts in the United States, before acquiring the rights to the country's biggest beauty pageant. Her ambition, declared as early as 2015, was clear: to restore Miss Senegal to its former glory. But between managing an institution and meeting the demands of a public seeking exemplary behavior, the path proved fraught with obstacles.
The year 2021 marked a turning point. The testimony of Ndèye Fatima Dione, Miss Senegal 2020, alleging rape during an official trip, plunged the committee into a media storm. Amina Badiane's reaction, which pointed to the victim's responsibility and demanded proof, led to charges of condoning rape and complicity against her. This upheaval tarnished the pageant's reputation and hampered its momentum. In this interview with Sitöé, she speaks for the first time in depth about this affair, which she describes as "bizarre."
Far from being merely a controversy, the interview takes stock of a presidency focused on reform. Under her leadership, Miss Senegal has undergone a true transformation. In February 2026, she announced the authorization of headscarves for contestants and the opening of the competition to dual nationals, provided they present a certificate of nationality. She also launched the decentralization of the qualifying rounds to the 14 regions to ensure greater fairness. Even more ambitious, she revealed that she was in discussions to host the Miss World pageant in Dakar and advocated for the institutionalization of the committee by the Senegalese state to give it a more structured framework.
Since 1960, Miss Senegal has trained the country's ambassadors. With Amina Badiane at the helm, the institution is seeking a new balance, combining greater rigor, more inclusivity, and a firm grounding in Senegalese cultural and religious values. Now cleared by the courts, she intends to turn the page on the controversy and write a new chapter of rebuilding, propelling Miss Senegal into a new era.
