Gambia River: general drop in water level, but no threat of flooding in Kédougou.

The main rivers in the Gambia River basin have seen a drop in water levels over the past 24 hours, according to Daily Hydrological Bulletin No. 7 published this Friday by the Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade. Despite this decline observed at all monitoring stations, the situation remains under control, with a green alert level indicating no particular risk.

At the Kédougou station, the river level stood at 2.23 meters at 8:00 AM, compared to 2.38 meters the previous day, representing a drop of 15 centimeters in 24 hours. This level remains well below the alert threshold of 7 meters, with a safety margin of 4.77 meters. Compared to the same period last year, the water level has also decreased by 53 centimeters.

The same trend is observed at the other stations in the basin. At Mako, the water level has decreased by 14 centimeters, while a more significant drop of 39 centimeters was recorded at Simenti. The stations at Gouloumbou, Diaguiri, and Niokolo Koba also show decreases of 8 cm, 1 cm, and 17 cm respectively over the past 24 hours.

However, hydrological data shows contrasting situations compared to the previous year. While Diaguiri recorded an interannual rise of 1.27 meters, the stations at Kédougou, Mako, Simenti, and Gouloumbou show levels lower than those observed on July 31, 2025.

Based on these observations, the hydrological services are maintaining the Gambia River basin on green alert, indicating that no risk of overflowing or flooding is currently reported. The significant differences between current levels and alert levels confirm a generally stable situation, although daily monitoring remains essential during this rainy season.
