Gambia River: sharp rise in water levels in Kédougou and at several stations.

Water levels in the Gambia River and several of its tributaries have risen significantly at several monitoring stations in the Kédougou and Tambacounda regions. According to the daily hydrological bulletin from the Tambacounda/Kédougou Water Resources Brigade, published this Friday, August 21, 2026, several waterways have recorded significant increases over the past 24 hours.

In Kédougou, the water level measured at 8 a.m. was 5 meters, compared to 3.77 meters the previous day, representing a rise of 1.23 meters in 24 hours. Despite this increase, the level remains 2 meters below the alert threshold of 7 meters. The station is nevertheless under a yellow alert, urging caution and close monitoring of the evolving situation.

The rise is also significant in Thiokoye, where the water level increased from 1.85 to 3.29 meters, a rise of 1.44 meters in 24 hours. This station also shows a year-on-year increase of 1.23 meters compared to the level recorded on the same date in 2025.

In Diaguiri, the river level reached 2.51 meters, compared to 1.10 meters the previous day, thus registering a rise of 1.41 meters. The level nevertheless remains 3.49 meters below the alert level, set at 6 meters.

The Mako station is also experiencing a significant rise. The water level has increased from 3.30 to 3.75 meters, a rise of 45 centimeters. Here again, the level remains 2.25 meters below the alert threshold of 6 meters.

In Gouloumbou, the water level reached 4.60 meters, compared to 4.32 meters the previous day, representing a rise of 28 centimeters. The level remains well below the alert threshold of 12 meters.

In Simenti, however, a slight decrease was observed. The water level fell from 5.27 to 5.18 meters, a drop of 9 centimeters in 24 hours. The alert level there is set at 13 meters.

On the Niokolokoba side, the situation remains stable, with a water level of 1.13 meters, identical to that recorded the day before.

A situation to monitor

The summary table in the bulletin highlights a general upward trend at several stations, notably Thiokoye (+1.44 m), Diaguiri (+1.41 m), Kédougou (+1.23 m) and Mako (+0.45 m). Simenti is the only station to show a decrease, while Niokolokoba remains stable.

At this stage, the recorded levels remain below the alert thresholds indicated for the stations concerned. However, vigilance remains essential, particularly in Kédougou, which is under a yellow alert, while the other stations are under a green alert, according to the bulletin.

The services responsible for monitoring water resources are therefore continuing to monitor the evolution of the levels of the Gambia River and its tributaries, in a context marked by significant variations over the last 24 hours.
