Gambia River: Water levels are receding in Kédougou, no flood alert at this stage

Despite the recent rainfall in eastern Senegal, the main waterways of the Gambia River basin remain under control. The latest hydrological bulletin reports a decrease in water levels at several stations, while the alert level remains green across the entire monitoring network.

The heavy rainfall in recent days in the Kédougou and Tambacounda regions has not yet resulted in widespread flooding. According to the hydrological bulletin published this Thursday, August 6, by the Water Resources Brigade, the situation remains generally stable in the Gambia River basin, with levels well below alert thresholds.

In Kédougou, the water level has dropped to 1.98 meters, a decrease of 9 centimeters in just 24 hours. The current level is more than 5 meters below the alert threshold of 7 meters, confirming the absence of an immediate flood threat. Compared to the same period last year, the drop is 1.57 meters.

The same trend is observed in Diaguiri, where the river level has fallen by 4 centimeters, and in Gouloumbou, which has recorded a drop of 3 centimeters. In Goumbayel, the water level has also decreased by 4 centimeters.

Only a few stations are showing a slight rise. In Mako, the water level has risen by 14 centimeters, while in Simenti, the increase is limited to 1 centimeter. These changes, however, have no impact on the alert level, which remains at green.

The Thiokoye station, however, did not transmit any data for this day, the bulletin specifies.

Overall, the hydrological services confirm that all monitored stations in the Gambia River basin remain on green alert, indicating that no particular risk of flooding has been identified. Daily observations continue, however, as the rainy season has entered a phase where river levels can change rapidly depending on rainfall in the coming days.
