Colombie : une femme meurt pour sauver son chien du tremblement de terre
With the dog Salomon in his arms, Michael Ruiz recounts how he found the animal near his sister's body, amidst the rubble, after Monday's devastating earthquake that killed nearly 300 people.
The man claims that his sister, Lenny, protected with her body the pet that managed to survive when his building collapsed in Cali, one of the cities most affected by the earthquake.
This "love story" between lawyer Lenny and her dog Salomon, according to Mr. Ruiz, has gone viral on social media.
"My sister gave her life for him because she was holding him tightly against her chest and the whole structure collapsed on him," he told AFP from the city of Pasto, with tears in his eyes.
"I see it as a love story, because obviously she loved this little animal (...) when you love something, you protect it," he said.
The 12-year-old dog suffers from epileptic seizures that have left him blind. He is one of 205 animals that have been rescued, according to the latest figures from the rescue organization.
His caretakers say the dog is "sad" about the loss. "I brought him to his coffin so he could say goodbye," said Jessica Florez, Lenny's sister-in-law.
