Corée du Sud : un magnat des jeux vidéo condamné à céder l'équivalent de 1,5 milliard de dollars à son ex-épouse
Seoul's family court on Wednesday ordered South Korean video game tycoon Kwon Hyuk-bin to pay the equivalent of $1.5 billion to his ex-wife as part of a divorce settlement.
"After examining how the conflict between the parties developed and the possibility of restoring their relationship, the court concluded that the marriage was irretrievably broken," said the Seoul Family Court, on Wednesday ordering Kwon Hyuk-bin, founder of Smilegate - one of South Korea's most successful video game companies - to cede 35% of his company to his ex-wife, "equivalent to 2.5 trillion won," as well as to pay "65 billion won," totaling $1.5 billion (€1.3 billion), according to the judgment.
The ex-wife, Mrs. Lee, filed for divorce in November 2022 after twenty years of marriage, claiming half of her stake in Smilegate for having, she claims, directly contributed to the creation and initial management of the company and then indirectly through her domestic work.
Before Ms. Lee filed for divorce, claiming that the businessman had neglected his family responsibilities, the couple had begun living separately in 2020. Kwon Hyuk-bin, who claimed he was in no way responsible for the failure of their marriage and did not wish to divorce, argued that his ex-partner could not be considered a co-founder, since she had neither invested capital in the company nor worked for it.
The court concluded that their marriage was irretrievably broken due to their ongoing conflicts and other circumstances. It ruled that both parties bore equal responsibility for the breakdown of their marriage but rejected the request for spousal support. The court valued Kwon Hyuk-bin's assets at 8.016 trillion won ($6 billion), local media reported.
If confirmed, the distribution of assets in this case would far exceed the previous record in South Korea of 944 billion won awarded to Roh Soh-yeong, director of the Nabi art center, during her divorce from Chey Tae-won, chairman of the SK group.
