Drame au marathon de New York: une jeune Américaine de 24 ans perd la vie
The running festival turned to tragedy in New York. Rachel Apa, 24, died after collapsing a few kilometers from the finish line, while running her very first marathon.
The young American woman collapsed just over four kilometers from the finish line, in Central Park. According to local media, two spectators attempted to resuscitate her at the scene before she was taken to the hospital. There, doctors did everything they could to save her, but to no avail.
The tragedy is all the more devastating because Rachel had given reassuring news to her father, Steve, halfway through: “I feel great. I’ve never felt better.”
A final message that went unanswered.
A few kilometers later, his messages became shorter. His father had then written to him: “Just the last part.” He never received a reply.
A former hockey player, the young woman participated in the race to raise funds for the Parkinson's Foundation, a disease that had taken her grandfather's life. Her initial goal of $4,000 has since been far exceeded, with over $27,000 raised.
“She was healthy and fit, full of energy, whether at school, in sports or in any other activity. It’s unimaginable, but we have to move forward,” her devastated father said.
The marathon organizers, New York Road Runners, also expressed their deep sadness and offered their condolences to the family and loved ones of the young runner.
