Le Brésil rappelle son ambassadeur en Argentine après des "propos offensants" de Milei
Brasilia recalled its ambassador to Argentina on Sunday for consultations "because of offensive remarks made by Argentine President Javier Milei against, among others, his left-wing Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva," the Foreign Ministry told AFP.
Present at the investiture of Flavio Bolsonaro as a candidate for the October election in Brazil on Saturday in Sao Paulo, the ultraliberal Argentine head of state described - without directly mentioning them - Lula as a "thief" and a "prisoner", and Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes as a "bald piece of trash", AFP observed.
"Brazil's ambassador to Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, has been recalled for consultations," President Milei "offended two powers, the Brazilian people and Brazilian democracy," a Brazilian diplomatic source told AFP.
A leading figure of the Latin American right, Milei warned, at this event alongside his ally Bolsonaro, against "the Lula risk" in the elections and called on Brazil to free itself from "slavery to the left".
Without naming Judge Moraes, President Milei also stated that "this bald piece of trash" had prevented him from visiting his "unjustly imprisoned friend," Jair Bolsonaro, father of Flavio and former president (2019-2022) who was jailed for attempting a coup in 2022 and then placed under house arrest in Brasilia.
In response to the Argentine leader's remarks, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has decided to recall the ambassador, who will arrive in Brazil between Sunday and Monday, a diplomatic source said.
