Les États-Unis livrent un nouvel avion militaire polyvalent à l’un de leurs alliés africains les plus fidèles
The U.S. Embassy in Botswana made the announcement, noting that the donation marked a significant milestone in the decades-long bilateral history of the two countries.
"This donation will strengthen Botswana's strategic airlift capabilities and further deepen the long-standing partnership between our two countries," the U.S. Embassy said.
Prior to the aircraft's delivery, Kelli L Seybolt, U.S. Air Force Assistant Secretary for International Affairs, revealed during her visit to Botswana in May 2026 that the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) had been selected to receive the aircraft.
The selection was made under the Excess Defence Articles (EDA) program, a U.S. project managed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) that distributes surplus military equipment to foreign allies and partners.
This southern African country received the same aircraft from Washington two years ago, in May 2024.
At the time, the aircraft, valued at approximately $30 million, arrived in Botswana and was welcomed at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in a ceremony on June 27 of that year.
As reported on DefenceWeb, the United States indicated that the aircraft would assist Botswana in military, humanitarian and emergency operations, both within the country and in the wider Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
The U.S. Embassy in Botswana announced on August 5, 2025, that the U.S. government had officially notified Congress of the plan to transfer two additional C-130H Hercules aircraft to Botswana, valued at $12 million each.
Botswana's defense forces have maintained an operational relationship with C-130 aircraft over a long period.
The force acquired three long-serving American C-130B Hercules aircraft for Z10 Squadron from the North Carolina Air Guard, facilitated through the Office of the National Guard's State Partnership Program.
One unit (OM1) was then put into storage, leaving two units (OM2 and OM3) in active service until one unit is taken out of service in 2024.
Since 1997, the C-130B fleet has been the cornerstone of BDF air operations, functioning as an instrument of Botswana's national power at local, regional and global levels.
Throughout its operational period, the C-130 platform provided vital support to the SADC mission in Mozambique, various African Union missions, and the United Nations mission in Sudan.
In addition, this aircraft has been used in security cooperation initiatives, including SADC air power exercises and joint special forces maneuvers with international partners.
In January of this year, the United States provided more than 12,000 spare parts to contribute to the 2024 C-130H donation.
This lot included essential components such as O-rings, altimeter test kits, air compressors, lubricants, and specialized workstations for propeller repair.
