Liban : Le Parlement vote l’abolition de la peine de mort
The Lebanese parliament has approved, by a majority vote, a law abolishing the death penalty. The decision has been hailed as historic in the Middle East region.
The text provides for replacing the death penalty with life imprisonment under strict regimes for crimes committed after its entry into force. For crimes committed before this date, the penalty will be replaced by life imprisonment with hard labor.
This reform puts an end to the presence of the death penalty in Lebanese legislation, although a de facto moratorium had been in place since January 2004.
