Iran's foreign minister warned on Sunday that his country would not let Ukraine's deadly attack on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea go unpunished.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attacked an Iranian merchant ship, killing a sailor, Abbas Araghchi wrote on X on Sunday. "The actions of this parasite from Kyiv CANNOT GO UNANSWERED."

On Saturday, the Foreign Ministry reported that an Iranian merchant ship had been attacked by Ukraine, causing an explosion.

And on the same day, Mr. Zelensky claimed on social media to have achieved "very solid results with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, targeting in particular ships used for the transport of military cargo involving Iran, as well as a warship."

"The attack carried out by the Ukrainian regime against an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea, explicitly claimed by the head of this regime, demonstrates the persistence of the irrational and hostile attitude of the Ukrainian regime," the ministry protested in a press release.

The Islamic Republic "has never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine," he asserted.

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) reported on Telegram drone attacks against "cargo ships under international sanctions that were being used to transport military cargo between Iran and Russia".

According to Iranian state television, the Ukrainian chargé d'affaires in Tehran was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Saturday to be reprimanded by a senior official for this "hostile and criminal act".

Abbas Araghchi also indicated that he had spoken with the European Union's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov about this.
